Luke and Dawn never go out. Except for when we do.

I want to get something out here, because frankly I’m sick of hearing it. I don’t care of those this is directed to see it or not, but this is why I have a web log right?

I work 40 hours a week. I get up at 6am and I go to bed at midnight. I generally have two classes a week, at night, and have to do the work that accompanies those classes. This includes regular weekly homework, assigned reading, group projects and exam-prep. I don’t have very much free time, and what free time I have, I do like to dedicate at least some of it to my girlfriend, whose schedule is equally filled.

Do I wish I could be out and social more frequently then I am? You bet. However, I am not willing to sacrifice my goals for that. I am generally an unmotivated person and getting what I do get done every week is already more than I’m used to doing. I like to lay around and I don’t mind being alone. Since I have found a mate going to every show or party that comes my way doesn’t really interest me. I appreciate the occasional ball-busting, but the ceaseless harping on Dawn and myself, every single time we actually do get to hang out with our ‘friends,’ about how infrequently we go out is not only old, its fucking stupid. I like my life exactly the way it is.

I can not go to bed at 3 on a weeknight, nor can I on a weekend. I don’t like to drink a lot because I don’t like what it does to me or my body. I can’t go to a concert and wait for 4 crappy bands to finish playing before the band I paid to see finally starts some time after 1AM. Perhaps I am generally incompatible with the lifestyle of those who simply can’t stand the fact that I’m not out all the time. I do appreciate that they apparently would like to see me more, in fact I’m quite touched by it, because I probably don’t deserve it. But understand that I am already stretched to the limit. And get off my fucking back about it.

Comcast Buys TechTV

Very sad news this. While I will admit that TechTV has been going steadily downhill for sometime- they’ve lost or fired almost all of their original personalities, almost all of their programming is recycled BBC, the shows they have are incredibly amateurish- the station still has a place in my heart. If only they realized just how much potential they have in shows like Call for Help, The Screen Savers and XPlay instead of trudging up trash like Wired for Sex, Invent This! and Body Hits. Unscrewed could be good if they actually hired some writers, but as it stands it’s just cheap laughs and cheap sex. Who knows what happens now, maybe by next this time next year I won’t even be able to get it (or whatever form it eventually takes) because Comcast won’t let DirecTV have it at any kind of reasonable rate. Sigh…

Update: Leo Laporte is no longer hosting the Screen Savers. I am both relieved and upset by this. On one hand, Leo is a jerk and a pervert who annoys me to no end. On the other, he was one of the few professional media people on the show who has experience on the air and decent knowledge of the subject matter. Honestly I think Kevin and Pat might work nicely together, but Leo was a host. Pat is too angry to be any good and Kevin just doesn’t have what it takes. We’ll see. I will miss his even-handed informative interviews though. I will not miss his incessant interrupting of his cohosts, or his weird, hardly veiled sexual innuendo and downright sexism towards his female hosts. Sigh…

Getting Old

I somehow completely forgot about the Wolf Eyes show last night, even though I’d was totally psyched for it all day. I am getting old.

Online Music Will Fail (part deux)

Companies are very quick to diss apple for using its own music formatting. Leaving aside the fact that AAC and Fairplay are open standards, all of these comapanies are missing the point. Granted, their business models depend on the success of their subscription and pay-to-play download schemes, so their business models themselves are missing the point. The point being: Apple makes its money off of iPods. People own iPods to play mp3s they’ve either grabbed off the net or ripped from their collections. The ITunes Music Store is merely the (not-so-sweet) icing on the cake. Should it become profitable, Apple will benefit. Should it not (more likely), they’ll still be making money off of ipods and the fact that they play back non-DRM’d music formats.

Apparently no one realizes this but Apple, who introduced iTunes and iPods under the notion that people should be able to use the music they already own as they please. Companies like Real (245 million dollars of debt in the last 3 years) are trying to jump on what they perceive as a gravy train. In truth, the pay-to-play music market has already reached saturation. I believe that these stores will never replace free downloads nor will they replace brick and mortar retailers. They may get a decent amount of business, but not to the degree that 20 or so online sources will be able to succeed. Walmart may prove an interesting case.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them

Reading (rather, listening) to this on my week off. Very funny, full of great anecdotes and of course works very hard to disprove the many many lies made by the right. I was talking about it with the peeps today and I realized that the biggest problem a book like this has is that anything that gets printed or eventually retracted or corrected or proven wrong by Al Franken has already fed itself into the mass mind. The damage is done and the virus has spread. The only way to stop these kinds of lies (it seems) is to stop them from appearing at all- by changing the entire business of journalism, or by having a seperate- but just as strong and just as ‘legitimate’ in the eyes of the public- voice to offer the truth with the exact speed and power the original source had. I guess this is why Franken and co. are coming up with Air America.

It was very scary to hear about the many lies that could quickly be disproved by doing simple google searches. Enjoying it regardless.
