EA (’s monopoly on) Sports

Having approached the NFL and been quickly rebuffed in the hopes of an exclusive contract multiple times over the last year, EA Sports has finally managed to get exclusive rights to NFL Teams, Players and Stadiums for its video game series for the next five years. Ultimately this is going to destroy any other game producer’s chance at making a quality football game that will actually sell. No doubt about it, this move was meant to stop Sega’s ESPN line before it got too big, and it undoubtedly will. Don’t you love unfair competition? Fark of course has the last word on the whole thing:

EA Sports and NFLPA sign exclusive rights deal, proving yet again that in America, when a competitor to a goliath makes a better product and sells it for less (ESPN 2K series), monopoly ensues. Adam Smith and gamers everywhere surrender

The Honor of the Jedi

Awesome article about duelling in Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. For a time, I ran a Jedi Outcast server, and duelling was its focus. Everything he describes here is pretty spot on, though we really discouraged heavy macro usage. Believe it or not, waiting in a queue of 12 other duellers to get your turn in the arena and all the ritual involved was a blast.

Give me a better Dock

I really wish the Dock in OS X were a little more customizable. I also wish there were some way to make commonly used apps cluster themselves together, and a way you could easily switch between windows instead of apps. This was something that was very much a part of OS 9, and became a part of windows, but has been lost since.
The thing about apps clustering themselves together would be that instead of placing all the apps you think you are most likely to use in a place in the dock, self-clustering apps would organize themselves based on when they are running. This would cut down the amount of searching across the dock you have to do when you want to switch between apps.
I suppose I could always use expose. I does not have me convinced yet.

Pressing Time

I’ve been working on a paper for my Information Policy class for the better part of two days now. Before I actually got into the writing part, I actually read up on what I wanted to write about quite a bit- a rare thing. Problem is, I cannot focus on writing more than a paragraph a time. I have never taken notes in my life, nor have I ever highlighted a page. I’m trying to pull all this information together and I just can’t do it. I will instead go to Fark a few hundred more times before I type in a few more words. Granted, the paper is due on Thursday and most likely I will finish it around 4am Thursday morning, but why can’t I just focus and punch this thing out? Why do I need to hit that deadline before I get to work? I have always been this way, and I feel like I’m getting worse, but probably, I’m just the same as I’ve always been- lazy, unable to focus. Or is it that my constant nearness to computers has finally shifted the way I work, to such a degree that I can’t sit on one thing for more than a few milliseconds? I know I’ll get it done, but I really want to do it right. But the wanting is apparently not enough. And if it isn’t, what could be?
